CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSTRATE

Mild steel is an iron alloyed with a maximum 0.25% carbon. Mild steel is very reactive and in the presence of oxygen, water and ions will quickly oxidise with a reversion back to rust. This high reactivity means that it must be adequately protected from these elements in order to meet its life expectancy. Depending upon the finished mild steel processing mill scale, rolling oils, rust and/or chemical contamination may be present that requires removal prior to painting.

Sometimes tubing etc may be shop primed to give short term protection to the mild steel surface. A proper anti-corrosion primer is required for long term protection of the steel.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Either abrasive blast to AS1627.4 Class 2 or hand or power tool clean to AS1627.2 removing all rust, mill scale, burr marks, welding flux/ spatter and sharp edges. If hand or power tool cleaning was performed degrease using Wax & Grease Remover in accordance with AS1627.1.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Drying times are approximate at 25° C and 50% relative humidity. Allow longer drying times under cool, moist or low air movement conditions. Spreading rates will vary from the quoted theoretical rates depending on application methods and surrounding conditions.
Do not paint if temperatures are below 10°C or likely to fall below 10°C during drying period
Refer to TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS for additional information.
