CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSTRATE

The high durability and stability makes reinforced concrete flooring a commonly used flooring material. Concrete floors may be hand finished or machine trowelled. Care must be taken to avoid over-working the wet material as laitenance may be induced. Concrete flooring (<32 MPa compressive strength) is prone to staining and surface contamination and may require painting to avoid these problems. Painting should be done after the floor has cured for 4 weeks for a water based coating system and 12 weeks for a solvent based coating system. Concrete requires acid etching or machine grinding to enhance adhesion of the coating system. Concrete floors must not be subjected to hydrostatic pressure.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Remove all traces of grease and other surface contamination using a suitable cleaner. Laitenance and efflorescence must be removed by chemical or mechanical grinding. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust. After effective acid etching allow the treated area to dry for a minimum of three days prior to coating with water based coatings and seven days for solvent based coatings. It is advisable to check for moisture by taping a piece of clear plastic on the surface to be coated and leave for 2 hours during daylight. If moisture collects under the plastic, longer drying is required. Sweep or vacuum before coating.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Drying times are approximate at 25° C and 50% relative humidity. Allow longer drying times under cool, moist or low air movement conditions. Spreading rates will vary from the quoted theoretical rates depending on application methods and surrounding conditions.
Do not paint if temperatures are below 10°C or likely to fall below 10°C during drying period
Refer to TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS for additional information.
