CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSTRATE

Manufactured timber board includes plywood, MDF, Chipboard and Craftwood. Plywood involves peeling of thin veneer sheets from a log and gluing them in layers with the grain of alternating layers at right angles to the one below. Plywood may be water resistant or non water resistant depending on the adhesive used. Chipboard is coarse chips pressed and glued in sheets of various thicknesses. MDF and Craftwood are fibrous material pressed and glued into sheets and mouldings of various shapes and thicknesses. MDF and Craftwood generally have a finer surface texture than Chipboard. Generally, these surfaces present little difficulties for painting except for the edges which are extremely porous. MDF may contain wax and be potentially problematic if using solvent based primers and it also contains tannins which may bleed into water based coatings. Generally water based undercoats are recommended as they are usually less problematic.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from contamination. Ensure any sanding dust is removed by wiping with a slightly dampened cloth prior to coating. Edges may require filling and possibly double coating to overcome excess porosity.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Drying times are approximate at 25° C and 50% relative humidity. Allow longer drying times under cool, moist or low air movement conditions. Spreading rates will vary from the quoted theoretical rates depending on application methods and surrounding conditions.
Do not paint if temperatures are below 10°C or likely to fall below 10°C during drying period
Refer to TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS for additional information.
